Misunderstandings about ergonomic chairs
There are currently a large number of chairs on the market that are marketed as "esports chairs" but are actually not very good in terms of ergonomics. In my opinion, there are three main problems with these chairs: racing chair shape, waist padding, and PU material.
Racing chair:
First of all, many "e-sports chairs" adopt the shape of racing seats in order to look cool. But is it really suitable to use a chair that costs tens of thousands of yuan to install in a car and move it to a desk for office gaming? First, in order to protect the safety of the players, racing cars have headrests instead of neck pillows, so that in the event of a collision, the neck pillows can be prevented from moving and damaging the cervical vertebrae. E-sports chairs usually have a suspended neck pillow, which is movable. It needs to be adjusted before use, and the material makes it easier for your neck to get hot and sweaty.
Second, the racing chair inhibits human-computer interaction activities to a certain extent. The racing chair provides lateral support when cornering to maintain the stability of the driver's body, so support designs are provided on both sides of the seat back. The racing driver operates the steering wheel and gear lever, and the side support does not affect the steering wheel operation. When operating the keyboard and mouse, the side support will restrict shoulder movement, affect arm movements, and make the mouse operation awkward.
(This style of chair is naturally perfect for playing racing games, but it is not suitable for office use and daily gaming)
Third, since race car drivers actually drive semi-lying while driving, racing cars do not have a lumbar pillow design, and gaming chairs will be equipped with lumbar pillows for auxiliary support. The average user has not received professional training in adjusting the lumbar pillow support position, and it is easy for them to choose comfort based on comfort. In this case, the shape of the lumbar spine may be affected, which is a safety risk.
Lumbar pillow cushion:
Many people think that ergonomic chairs have separate upper and lower backs to enhance horizontal waist support. Therefore, you can achieve ergonomics by adding a cushion yourself. It's smart to save money and trouble. But this is actually a high-risk behavior:
Generally, the chair back is fixed, and a back cushion is added for static sitting position. This can easily cause lumbar muscle strain.
Many people cannot confirm the safe support point position and choose the most comfortable support position. Since most people tend to find support near the lumbar spine more comfortable, in fact it can easily cause pressure on the lumbar spine.
Fabric material:
(If you weren’t dressed neatly, you might get stuck sitting on this chair.)
For the sake of aesthetics, many gaming chairs like to be completely surrounded by leather and have large areas of dyeing and printing. The look and feel is indeed very cool, fashionable and recognizable, but the price of genuine leather is too high and requires special treatment. Most of these inexpensive chairs are packed with imitation leather such as PU material. The feel and breathability of PU material are difficult to satisfy, especially in summer. When exposed skin comes into contact with PU material, it does not take long to become sticky and wet, which is very uncomfortable. , over time it can even cause skin problems.
